Aged 34
his medal entitlement is not known

Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, HMS "Daedalus"
Killed in Air Accident on Thursday, 20th August 1942

Sydney Tetlow was born in 1908 (St. Giles, London Q2-1908 1B:556), son of William Herbert and Lillian Ada TETLOW (née JEEVES).

1911 census...Aged 3, he was at 17 New Chesterfield St.W. Marylebone, London with his father William TETLOW [26] woollen warehouseman born Askham, Lancs; his mother Lillian [28] born Cambridge; brother William [1] born Marylebone.

He married Winifred Violet PYE in 1933 (Newmarket Q2-1933 3B:1408). His death was registered in Gosport, Hampshire Q3-1942 2B:819 and he was buried in Soham on 26th August 1942. Administration in 1943 was to his widow and the address given was Cranscombe Court, 23 Aston Avenue, Kenton, Middlesex(which is where they were living in 1936). They appear to have had a son, Robin, in Hendon 1939

They have not been identified in the 1939 register.

HMS Daedalus II was a Naval Air Station and training establishment. It had four locations during World War Two.
Firstly it was at Lympne Airport, Kent and commissioned as HMS Buzzard in 19139 then re named HMS Daedalus in 1940 before being transferred back to the RAF.
Next the Royal Motor Yacht Club at Sandbanks, Dorset was requisitioned and commissioned as HMS Daedalus on 15th May 1940, also known as RNAS Sandbanks.
Then the unit from Lympne was moved to Clayton Hall, Newcastle under Lyme and retaining the name HMS Daedalus II.
Finally in 1942 a satellite of Sandbanks was opened at RNAS Lawnenny Ferry in Pembrokeshire.
This makes it rather difficult to establish where Sydney Tetlow was based. That his death was registered in Gosport does suggest that RNAS Lee on Solent which also bore the name Daedalus comes into the story somewhere. In fact on line enquiries (Hans Houterman- www.unithistories.com) did come up with "As a Temp. Lt. (Special Branch) RNVR he was serving at RN Barracks, Lee-on-Solent (from 22 Apr 1942 onwards).(Special Branch means he was not Executive branch and not eligible for sea going command)

Daedalus, air crash: Temp. Lieutenant, Sydney H TETLOW, RNVR; Temp. Sub-Lieutenant, Hugh REVELL RNVR; Petty Officer, Patrick J. NICHOLAS FAA/FX 76378; Act.Leading Airman, Bertram W. LOW FAA/FX 260816. From Fleet Air Arm Museum there is a brief history of Walrus seaplane W2678, which explains that this aircraft at Lee on Solent had a hatch cover break away as it turned across wind after take off, turned to port and crashed on the roof of a building in the Royal Navy Depot on 20th August 1942, killing the crew of Sub Lieut H.REVELL, Petty Officer P.J.NICHOLAS and Leading Airman B.W.LOW. Since Lieut. TETLOW is also entered on www.naval-history.net as being part of this accident, it has to be assumed he was occupying that building at the time.
